Having Liability Insurance is mandatory in Maryland, D.C. and Virginia.  Having the right insurance is very important.

As stated above, Liability Insurance is Mandatory but it is not the only type of insurance you should carry.  Below is a overview of the type of insurance and recommended coverage amounts we at Williams and Williams, P.C. believe is mandatory coverage.

Liability Insurance:  Every Car must carry this insurance.  It is insurance that protects you from personal liability for an accident that you cause.  All Attorneys in our office carry large amounts of liability insurance, probably more than we need, but having to little is a worse mistake.  We suggest a minimum of $100,000 of liability insurance and we recommend you consider carrying $300,000.

Collision Coverage:  This is insurance that will pay for damage to your car if you are at fault in an accident or the at fault party has no insurance to pay for your damage.  We recommend that you carry an amount in keeping with the value of your car.  For example if you drive a luxury vehicle you should carry more collision coverage than if you drive an economy vehicle.

Gap Insurance:  This is insurance that pays the difference between what your car is worth and what you owe on your car if it is "totaled" in an accident.  For example if you own a car that has a "blue book"   value of $10,000 and you still owe the finance company $12,000 neither your insurance company or the at fault driver's insurance company will pay more than $10,000.  In this instance you will be stuck with the $2,000 difference.  Gap insurance will pay this $2,000 difference.

Uninsured/Underinsured Insurance:  This is insurance that protect you if you are injured by a driver who either has no liability insurance or has a small amount that is not enough to compensate you for your injuries.   We recommend you carry the same amount of UM insurance as you carry for liability insurance.

Personal Injury Protection Insurance:  This  Is insurance that pays you for medical bills and lost wages regardless of who is at fault.  If you are not at fault, you may collect from PIP and from the other persons liability insurance policy.  We suggest a minimum of $5,000 and  recommend $10,000.
